A Formspree alternative, compared honestly

Formspree is the form backend most people start with, and it is a good one. People look for an alternative when the 50 free submissions run out or when the next plan’s allowance is too small for the price. Below is the comparison plan by plan, the cases where Formspree is still the right choice, and how to move a form across.

Plans, compared

The plans a small site or a freelancer is choosing between, as each company publishes them. Formspree Business ($90, or $60 billed yearly, for 20,000) and MakeTheForm Agency are left out for space.

The minimal integration

A Formspree form moves by changing its action. This is a complete form pointed at MakeTheForm. Formspree’s _gotcha honeypot is accepted under that name, so an existing trap keeps working unchanged.

Swap in your own endpoint. Your existing fields, labels and styles stay as they are.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Create a form in MakeTheForm

Sign up and create a form. You get an endpoint URL and an inbox straight away.

  2. 2

    Swap the action URL

Replace the https://formspree.io/f/… address in your form’s action, or in your fetch call, with your MakeTheForm endpoint. Nothing else in the markup has to change.

  3. 3

    Keep your honeypot

A _gotcha field is read as the honeypot as it is. You can rename it to _mtf_honeypot later, or leave it.

  4. 4

    Set the subject and Reply-To

Formspree takes the subject from a subject field and Reply-To from email. On the form’s Notifications page, set Subject line to {{subject}} and Reply-To field to email.

  5. 5

Test, then retire the old form

Verify your recipient address, submit the live form, and see it arrive. Only then delete the Formspree form, so nothing is missed in between.

When Formspree is the better choice

You need an integration we do not have

Formspree connects to Stripe, Salesforce, Zoho CRM, Zapier and Constant Contact. MakeTheForm does not, so if one of those is the point of the form, Formspree is the better tool.

You want chat alerts or instant email for free

Formspree’s free plan sends to Slack, Discord and Telegram. MakeTheForm’s free plan sends one email digest a day; instant email and chat start on Pro.

You need more than 5 forms without paying

Formspree allows unlimited forms on every plan. MakeTheForm Free allows 5 active forms; Pro and Agency are unlimited.

You need phone support or an SLA

Formspree’s Custom plan offers phone support, a service level agreement and hands-on onboarding. MakeTheForm offers none of those today.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free alternative to Formspree?

It depends on what ran out. If it was the 50 free submissions, MakeTheForm’s free plan takes 250 a month with spam filtering and a searchable inbox. If you rely on Formspree’s free Slack or Discord alerts, note that MakeTheForm keeps those for paid plans.

Is MakeTheForm a drop-in replacement for Formspree?

Almost. Change the form’s action URL, and set the subject and Reply-To on the form’s Notifications page, because Formspree reads those from fields named subject and email. The _gotcha honeypot works unchanged.

How many submissions does Formspree allow for free?

Formspree’s pricing page lists 50 submissions a month on the free plan and describes it as for testing and development. Paid plans start at 200 a month.

What happens when I go over my limit on MakeTheForm?

We email you as you approach it. Pro and Agency keep accepting submissions past the monthly allowance, billed at $2 per 1,000, up to twice the allowance. Free stops accepting new submissions at its limit. Nothing already stored is touched either way.

How does MakeTheForm compare at higher volume?

MakeTheForm Agency is $29 a month for 25,000 submissions. Formspree Business is $90 a month, or $60 billed yearly, for 20,000, and adds a rules engine for routing submissions and custom email domains.
